The Church, The State and The Mob I i i i i | i Easier Sunday, Rt. Rev. j Leo Haid D, D.. O S. B., i Bishop of North Carolina,! preached a sermon at Belmont j N. C. After speaking of the | resurection of Christ as the j crowning work of His life,! teaching and passion, and j holding up Christ as the only j foundation of the Church, and regreting the divisions that have sprung up among Christ-' iaus and of the supreme ne- j cessity of recognizing au thor ity in the church, Bishop Haid said: "The rejection of authority is not confined to religion, it j spreads in every direction. Qme God is no longer ac knowledged as the great source of all authority; once : His Church is no longer obey- j ed, the bonds which unite Christian society are broken and shattered. The family is the center of society; but be hold how children disobe}" their parents and soon le&rn to do as they wish or their un bridled passions dictate. They grow to manhood and the idea of obedience to law and authority grows weaker and weaker. Laws are disregard ed and in two many cases those who are called upon to enforce the laws are derided, opposed and even murdered. To make matters worse, judges whose lives are devot ed to the study of law and jus tice are abused and theii de- ; cisions questioned or laughed to scorn. Public efforts are made to fetter their indepen dence by threatening to recall them from office if the}T re fuse to be governed by pri vate interests or the vagaries of changing public opinion. Finally, not tlieir decisions must guide, but the people at large, too often without the least knowledge of law, in the heat of passion, must set aside the sober judgemnts of our Courts and replace with their own opinions—opouions form ed in the heat of controversy and party strife.” 1 he civilization or man-! i kind, human happiness, all j j have their source and origin jin the teaching of Christ, j Reject His authority, the au | tliority of his laws and com i mands, and 3’,ou undermine society and by degrees reduce mankind to the same depth of degradation and crime and aw ful suffering from which Christ redeemed it. Social ism is raising its red flag all over the civilized world. It acknowledges no God, no j hereafter, no immortal soul to j be saved. It concentrates its j whole being into the world 1 —this temporary existance. j It hopes for no happiness be-1 yond the grave, hence must have all enjoyment in this world or not at all. It is real ly paganism returned to drag ' down Christianity and Christ ; fan morality and Christian ; duty.*5 i Commenting on the [above !*the Charlotte Observer says j editoriolly: , j The condition so graphically . portrayed by Bishop Haid is r1, 4-1, *». 1.. 1 1 An Interesting Trial There was a very interest ing trial in Squire James’s Court Saturday in which one Hendry Churchil and the State of North Carolina were plaintiff's and Ex.-Sherifi A.R. Lakey defendant. The said Henry Churchil, (not Lord Churchil of London mind you) deposed and said that on a certain morning about two o’clock, in the year of our Lord 1911, he, together with a small boy, passed the resi dence ot the aforesaid Lakey in a more or less drunken condition, but not too drunk to use a few commonplace oaths, not very loud however, said he, that one could not have heard him more than 50 or 75 yards away. He also and furthermore stated that at the same time and place the said Lakey did malicious ly and feloniously assault a third party, this third party being a gallon jug full of GOOD corn ‘dicker,” wherein the said Lakey “slanted” the said jug against a rock, the contents running down the roadside sparkling in the moonlight, while he, Churchil, sat and looked on in wonder ous amazement, with an ineg ular train of thought or fan cies in meditation, but this did r not last long for he soon begun to cuss outright, and Lakey bagan to manipulate with his fist in such effect that his visitors soon depart ed. Both sides had attorneys but the court thought Lakey ought to pay something for his fun, so he was adjuged guilty on two charges, one be ing assault and the other iu jury to personal property. In the first case he was fined $1.00 and the cost and bound to court in the other. Candidate F°r Sheriff I hereby announce myself a can didate for nomination for the office of Sheriff of Yadkin County subject to the will of the Repub lican County Convention. I will appreciate the support of all who frvor my nomination. Very trill v yours, C. W. PoiNOEXTEIt -<>■ Yadkin Superior Court Court opens here next Monday7, with Judge O. H. Allen presiding. No impor tant cases are on the calender for this term and it thought that the session will not last more than two or three days. The docket contains 57 crim inal cases but all of these are small and frivilons. Several civil cases are set down for trial also. good citizens whatever their ecclesiastical connection, on guard against the corrupting tendencies of these times and should make them turn again st all preachers of false doc trine, all of those who would incite the people against the orderly methods of the law, all preachers of discontent, all demagogues and wicked men who would use the passions of the mob to overrule the courts of justice. Now as in the days of the Master it is the , ^lob against the State, and it is the duty of the pulpit to cry aloud against all the criminal crew of self-seeking politician | who would pull down the tem j pie of our liberties to gratify personal ambitions or pay po Candidate For Treasurer I hereby announce myself a f candidate for nomination for the I office of Treasurer of Yadkin • County subject to the will of the ■'!
